STEEL&HAMMERS

Anton Estaniel (cello and drums) with Elyse Weakley (keyboard and voice) makeup the cross genre duo Steel&Hammers. Weakley and Estaniel, both classically trained, have taken part in a wide array of musical projects including Middle Eastern and Latin music and currently work together in the Hurd Ensemble, recently featured at the Kennedy Center, and Redwood Tango Ensemble presenting contemporary tango music. Their recording projects include collaborations with acclaimed rapper MC Squadda B and Grammy award-winning composer Mason Bates.

The journey begins with diverse perspectives on mystical music from across the globe. Claude Debussy’s “Sunken Cathedral” is performed in the vast beauty of Saint Joseph’s Cathedral, animated by legendary designer architect Ken Fulks, followed by the traditional Indian “Bho Shambho” on mridangam and flute. Icelandic visionary Johann Johannsson’s “Sálfræðingur” and Mason Bates’ “Tectonic Plates” integrate strings and beats in meditative ways.

Performing original music by San Francisco-based composer George Hurd, The Hurd Ensemble, selected by Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates, unifies the worlds of electronic and classical music. All the music is written for string quartet (violin, viola, cello, upright bass), piano, and electronics, meticulously bound together with digitally arranged sounds collected from Hurd’s travels.
